Musiclink has a fulltime PhD student employed at the company, Daniel Johansson. His research is focused on what impact the technical transformation, going from analogue to digital distribution, has on the music industry. The research takes a system point of view on production, distribution and consumption of music with a strong focus on the distribution processes.
During the last couple of years, the music industry has gone through a massive reconstruction. The main reason can clearly be identified as the technical transformation from analogue to digital technology which gradually are taking over the traditional distribution and sales channels. These alternative distribution technologies has been developed outside the traditional music industry which has led to difficulties for the originators to embrace and use the technique in profitable business models. That is why it is necessary with new, in-depth knowledge around these new technologies.
Improvement of methods and division models for copyright royalties is one of the research areas, development of Digital Rights Management and interoperability between already existing systems is another. Daniel is doing his research as a part of the Department of Systems and Software Engineering at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) as well as the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH). The PhD studies commenced in mars 2005 and the thesis is approximately due by 2010. www.kks.se, www.danieljohansson.se, www.bth.se
